Brandon Twp.- The cause of a fire that destroyed a detached garage in the 700 block of N. Sashabaw Road on Jan. 10 remains undetermined, but it is unlikely that it was caused by squirrels.
Firefighters responded to the fire at about 5:46 p.m. and found the structure fully engulfed in flames. The homeowner said no one had been in the garage for two months and a spotlight on the garage was repaired about a month-and-a-half ago. She suspects squirrels were in the walls of the garage, possibly causing the fire.
Fire Chief Bob McArthur said that while squirrels can’t be ruled out, ‘it would be quite unusual.?
Also unusual is a car fire that firefighters responded to on January 11 at S. Ortonville and Seymour Lake roads.
The driver said the vehicle, a 4-door Buick, was leaking fuel and the manager of a repair shop came to her home to fix it. She had driven the vehicle only a few miles when it filled with smoke and her brakes failed. She pulled over to the side of the road and she and her passenger ran for safety.
