Tenacious finish for girls

One point.
Just one point kept the Clarkston High School girls? tennis from qualifying for a trip to the MHSAA Division 1 Girls State Tennis Finals in Midland next week.
The girls needed to accumulate 18 points at regionals in Rochester May 14.
They walked away with 17.
‘It is with great regret that Gabriella, Kristina and Katie are not able to attend states,? said Coach Becky Freeman in an email to The Clarkston News. ‘After such an outstanding season, the girls and myself were very upset by this final standing. I feel they should be recognized for such an outstanding job.?
As the No. 1 singles player, senior Nicole Janek (16-3) qualified to compete at states as an individual. She’ll head to Midland for those matches on May 29-30.
No. 2 singles player Gabriella Spindler, a freshman, finished the season undefeated, at 19-0 overall, and Kristina Lucas, a sophomore, finished 17-2 overall.
‘The singles players had a terrific season,? Freeman said. ‘Our league match was a rainout, but each of these girls would have surely won their flight. Gabriella and Kristina won regionals, and surely would have been seeded players at states had we won enough points to go.?
Freshman Katie Brozovich (17-2) and Nicole Janek were second at regionals.
Doubles teams included: Erica Zentner (11) and Taylor Weiss (10); Stephanie Hamliton (11) and Katy Schweitzer (12); Kelsey Crawford (11) and Victoria Sova (10); Amy Wozniak (9) and Abbey Hubregsen(9); Subs were Annie Gencay and Meggie Stefani.
