Try a CROP Walk

Rain or shine the 22nd annual CROP Walk will take place May 2. This year’s organizers hope to send out 300 families. They’re hoping families will set a goal of $100 in sponsor donations. A CROP boot pin will be given to each walker who collects $150 or more in donations.
Last year, the CROP Walk finished with 293 walkers and $27,559.
A 10K walk begins 2 p.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church, 21 East Burdick and ends at the Lake Orion United Methodist Church on Flint Street in downtown Lake Orion. A shorter one mile walk which begins and ends at the Oxford church also starts at 2 p.m.
Registration (with music by PRAISE) begins at 1:15 p.m. at the Oxford church. A send-off celebration is scheduled for 1:45.
Twenty five percent of the proceeds will be shared by FISH, St. Vincent De Paul and the Baldwin Avenue United Methodist Church Community Kitchen.
Fifty seven percent will be given to Church World Service for worldwide aid and 18 percent goes for administration costs and fundraising materials.
Last year, 147 communities in Michigan organized CROP Walks which resulted in $1,999,636. Almost $500,000 was given to 330 Michigan hunger agencies.
With both a global and local perspective, CWS provided nearly $5 million for US hunger and disaster needs, including over $4 million for food programs and hurricane and tornado relief assistance in 2003.
The US is the largest country recipient of CWS funds.
