Dear Editor,
(In response to: ‘Common waste hauler wrong for township community,? The Citizen, Feb.7, page 6):
It seems as though some residents are jumping to conclusions regarding the issue of a common waste hauler. The Brandon Township Board of Trustees has approved our participation in a study that will evaluate waste streams and environmentally-friendly waste treatment facilities. A lot of work has been done by the original members of this study group to procure a grant to fund the study and to develop a bid package for potential consulting firms. I felt it was in the best interest of our township to be proactive and asked to observe this established study. The other members of the study were very gracious in honoring my request and went a step further by offering to let Brandon become a member of this free study. In an effort to find out if this study would have a positive impact on the Brandon community, I agreed to bring the resolution back to our board for approval.
The result of this study may offer our community a great opportunity to be more environmentally friendly while reducing trash collection costs. My opinion is that it would be better to participate in this current study done at no cost to the Brandon taxpayers now, than to conduct one of our own studies at a later date that might come with a sizable price tag. After the consulting firm’s recommendations are made, we will bring that information back to our respective communities for input and feedback. At that time we will encourage community involvement. Our residents? thoughts and concerns about this project are important. In the next few months, residents can expect to see more information about this study in the newspaper and on our cable channel. At this time however, it is difficult to answer questions such as those about waste haulers.
For residents who want to express their opinion to me about this issue, I can be contacted at kthurman@brandontownship.us or 248-627-4918.
