The Oxford Varsity Golf team has been hitting some bad luck lately, but it certainly hasn’t been because of poor play. The Wildcats lost two very close meets to Fenton and Lapeer West this week, and then got a much-needed win against Lapeer East on Sept. 15.
On Sept. 11, the Wildcats came up just short losing by four strokes with a final score of 161-157. Oxford’s Mike Morse and Aaron Bruce shot under 40 rounds, but it wasn’t enough for the struggling Wildcats.
Last week’s loss to Lapeer West saw similar results as Oxford dropped the league meet by two strokes, losing 163-161, despite some individual rounds in the upper 30’s and lower 40’s. The losses put the Wildcats to 0-2 in league standings, and 1-2 overall.
On Monday, the Wildcats pulled together to defeat the Lapeer East Eagles by 11 strokes, winning 158-169. Joe Fedorinchik shot a 38 for Oxford and Aaron Bruce shot a 39. The critical win makes the Wildcats? overall record 2-2 and improves their league record to 1-2.
Oxford head coach Dan Lovell believes that this is the start of a longer winning streak for the Cats, who have been averaging a respectable 159 per dual-meet.
The Wildcats dual-meet against the Holly Bronchos, originally scheduled for Friday, September 12, had to be cancelled due to a scheduling conflicts and has been set for Thursday, September 25. The team goes up against the Linden Eadles tomorrow (Thursday) at their home course, Oxford Hills. The golfers hope to even their league standings.
