Oxford resident Geraldine Reed won a silver medal in the weightlifting event at the Michigan Senior Olympics Summer games in Rochester on July 16. Geri, who competed for the first time in the 55-59 age group, earned the silver after cleanly benching 100 pounds. The gold medal lift was 105 pounds.
Geri prepared for the competition at Oxford’s Anytime Fitness with the help of certified personal trainer and Oxford resident, Carol Carpenter.
‘When Geri approached me to help her train for the bench press I was a little suprised. She is a small lady, very unassuming. She was hoping to be able to bench press 85pounds. It didn’t take long to realize that all she needed was a little encouragement and she was gonna do great things. I couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishment,? Carpenter said.
The two will begin training again this fall with sights set on a 110lb lift and a gold medal at the winter 2011 games. Geri also earned a bronze medal at the MSO 5k run
