It’s hard to say what was more exciting at the 2016 Outhouse Races, the gregarious announcer introducing each team, or the actual race itself.
Urassis Dragon a Potty took first place with a two-run total time of 76.13 as runners Micah Collier and Ryan Satko pulled Alicia Flynn down Broadway and back in a bright blue porta potty.
Second was team Captain Sparrow, in 78.47, and third was Oakland YMCA Crossfit Booty Snatchers in a time of 83.12.
Judges chose Flies Around the Crapper as the best dressed, and each of the three female flies earned a bottle of air freshener.
In the same token, The Ice Golf Challenge took a turn for the wild when it was decided the course was to be laid out in downtown Lake Orion instead of on the lake itself.
Champions of the Ice Golf Challenge was The Duggan from Northwestern Mutual team, who took home the giant first-place-flask, larger than two heads combined. Champions included Brian Duggan, his son Michael, and Rob Cavanagh.
The 9-hole event was sold out.
‘I think we just proved that we could have the event successfully with or without ice, which we couldn’t predict. We were trying to decide whether to postpone, but went ahead and made it as fun as possible. Everyone really seemed to enjoy golfing in the downtown,? Ice Golf committee chairman Steve Auger said, promising to include a few holes in the downtown next year too.
Overall, the Lake Orion Rotary Club, who coordinated the event, raised around $15,000 from the second annual Ice Golf Challenge, all to go to the Rotary’s charity projects.
Donations were flying at the afterglow party hosted at 51 North Brewery as patrons had the chance to either drink beer, listen to live music, or watch the Outhouse Races performed just outside on Broadway.
It was one fun weekend in downtown Lake Orion, and one that is hoped to grow by all parties involved, including the Lake Orion Lion’s Club who helped coordinate the Outhouse Races, the Rotary, and many other volunteers who made the 2016 Winter Carnival a hoot.
