A 19-year-old Brandon Township woman wanted by police was captured in Pontiac last week and arraigned on charges of felonious assault and malicious destruction of property.
Samantha Leighann Layman was arraigned on the charges on Sept. 29 at Sixth Judicial Circuit Court, the day after police located her at her grandmother’s home. Bond was set at $7,500 cash surety or 10 percent. Layman was arraigned on Oct. 1 on a domestic violence warrant by Magistrate Elizabeth Chiappelli. Bond on that charge was set at $25,000, no 10 percent. Layman remains in the Oakland County Jail. A preliminary exam was set for Oct. 4 at 52-2 District Court.
Layman’s boyfriend, Brian Michael Koop, 18, was arraigned Sept. 20, also on a felonious assault charge, from the same incident.
According to police reports, Brandon deputies were dispatched to the Sashabaw Meadows Mobile Home Park in the early morning hours of Sept. 18 regarding a confrontation, but police arrived to find the suspects had left. Later that day, around 9:50 p.m., the deputies were dispatched to a fight in progress at Pinoak and Birch. They arrived at the intersection of Dogwood and Pinoak, where they were flagged down by a witness. The 18-year-old victim was in front of a home in the 3700 block of Birch. The fight had taken place in front of a home in the 3600 block of Hawthorne.
In a statement, Koop admitted selling marijuana from the Hawthorne residence to the victim, his younger brother, and their friend. The friend hit Koop during the drug deal, and Koop said he hit the victim with a baseball bat after feeling his and Layman’s lives were threatened.
Layman allegedly used a tire iron to strike the victim on the back of his head, and to smash out windows on the victim’s older brother’s vehicle.
