Woodworking Club community-oriented

Groveland Twp.- The smell of cedar fills the air on a recent Thursday morning.
Several men are using tools such as table saws, sanders and a drill press to work on wood in the basement of a home. More wood is stacked nearby.
It’s the weekly meeting of the Woodworking Club and today, members are building two benches for a memorial garden at the Edna Burton Senior Center.
The group meets at 10 a.m. every Thursday, at the senior center or at a club member’s home. The club was begun in November 2003.
‘We’re all here because we enjoy it,? says club leader Norm Mallory, who likes not only the woodworking, but socializing with other members. ‘They’re a good group. They all have different theories and it’s interesting to hear their ideas.?
The group has worked on several projects for the community, including shadow boxes for the Ortonville Women’s Club, bookcases for the Historical Society, and a working model of the Old Mill. They hope to be done with the benches by the end of this month and have several other projects lined up.
In considering projects for the community, Mallory says the club looks at the amount of labor required, the timeframe to finish the work and if members will learn anything by doing it.
Currently, the Woodworking Club has about 20 members, about eight of whom regularly attend meetings. They welcome anyone 18 or older who would like to join and are will to teach those who aren’t familiar with the machines. For more information on the Woodworking Club, call (248) 627-6447.
