Detroit — From Feb. 28-March 1 the 2025 Michigan High School Athletic Association Individual Wrestling tournament was at Ford Field, Detroit. More than 140 high school wrestlers qualified for the event including five from Goodrich and one from Brandon high schools.
Martian Senior James Mahon (38-3) won a state championship at 215 pounds with a fall over Soph. Holden Otter, from Carleton Airport (49-5)
After winning the 285-pound championship in 2023 and 2024, Mahon made the move down to 215 pounds this season.
The change didn’t keep him from adding a third title, as he scored a take down early in the match and eventually worked it into a pin fall.
“It was tougher (this season at 215 pounds),” said Mahon following the match. “I wasn’t used to people shooting on me. I had to make my stance a lot lower. I couldn’t just run through people.”
“At points, (I doubted if I could win), but it didn’t last long,” he said. “If I had that thought, I just told myself, ‘I am the best. I am going to win a third (title).’”
Also, placing for Goodrich at 150 pounds Goodrich Jaden Davis fifth place; at 175 pounds Jonathan Golec third place and at 190 pounds Jack Mahon eighth place.
Brandon Senior Nick Montreuil 144 pounds (39-16), lost to Jaron Bensinger, Gaylord High School. Montreuil finished the season as one of the top 16 wrestlers in the state.
“Nick was our most valuable wrestler this season and set a great example for our upcoming young wrestlers,” said Kent Bailo, Blackhawk Varsity Wresting coach.
