Review picks up 2 awards in MPA newspaper contest

Elaine Stieb, editor of The Lake Orion Review for the past 15 years, was notified last week that she received two awards in this year’s Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Judges for the contest were members of the Iowa Newspaper Association. They studied over 4,498 entries submitted by 164 Michigan newspapers
Stieb took the number one spot in the Weekly Class D News Picture category. The category had 25 entries. She won for ‘What a sinker,? a photo published on the front page of The Review on Oct. 22, 2003.
It showed an excavator sunk in the mud at a construction site at M-24/Church Street.
The judge wrote, ‘Great shot. I wasn’t expecting to see something like this today.?
Stieb’s column ‘Notes? was picked as the second best in the Weekly Class D Local Columnist category. Thirty five entries were submitted.
The judge said, ‘Stieb does an excellent job of sharing stories from her life with readers in these columns.?
Sherman Publication’s assistant to the publisher, Don Rush, earned an honorable mention in the Local Columnist category.
Rush wrote a story with Oxford Leader Editor CJ Carnacchio on a ‘Tornado in Addison? that earned the two a third place in the Weekly Class D Spot News Story category.
‘Well written articles tell readers what happened and the affect the tornado had on the community,? wrote the judge.
Carnacchio was awarded an honorable mention in the Weekly Class D Editorial Writing category. The judge said, ‘Very, very good editorial writing. This could have been two or three…very close competition.?
