A five-year-old boy suffered multiple injuries on Nov. 20 after his grandfather unwittingly ran over him with a riding lawnmower.
Oakland County Sheriff deputies and Independence Fire Department paramedics were dispatched at about 11:16 a.m. to a Waterford Road residence. The 47-year-old man told deputies he was mowing the lawn when he heard a thump.
He discovered his grandson wedged between the rear tires and the deck of the mower, but was able to extricate the boy before emergency units arrived.
Reports said the boy suffered a broken collarbone, a dislocated hip and a bruised lung. He was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center for treatment and overnight observation.
The man told deputies his grandson regularly rode with him on the lawnmower, but in this instance he was unaware that the boy was outside in the yard, reports said.
