Volunteers are invited to participate in hand-on training workshops to learn how to help monitor the health of the Clinton River, its tributaries and Lake St. Clair.
The Clarkston area is considered part of the ‘upper Clinton watershed,? according to the Clinton River Watershed Council, and two sessions are scheduled locally as part of the ‘Adopt-a-Stream? program.
Part I of the training will help volunteers learn about the watershed and how everyday actions influence its health from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, April 3 at the Independence Township Library, 6495 Clarkston Road.
Part II of the training includes plans to get boots wet, as volunteers will head streamside to fine-tune skills. The group will meet at Clarkston United Methodist Church, 6600 Waldon Road on Saturday, April 23. The session will run from 1-4 p.m., with carpooling to at least one additional site.
Twice a year (May and October), volunteer teams will visit their adopted sites and collect data, including physical, chemical and biological information. This data will allow CRWC to develop a long-term record of aquatic organisms, habitat quality and basic chemical conditions to be used by municipalities for programs to protect water quality.
