Oxford Bank’s main branch held a bake sale Friday and raised $236 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life May 14-15 at Oxford High School.
The bank is a $1,000 sponsor of the 24-hour relay event which is designed to raise money for cancer research and promote cancer awareness and education.
Tony Lasher, marketing director for Oxford Bank, said so far 40 employees have signed up to walk in the relay as part of the bank’s team.
Although the bank is entered as one large team, its seven branches and various departments are currently competing against each other to see who can raise the most money, Lasher said.
For its first fund-rasier, the main branch in downtown Oxford decided to put on a bake sale for which all the employees contributed home-made goodies, according to Lasher.
Donna Miller, a bank teller for 4? years, returned to the Oxford branch after 10 months of sick leave to man the bake sale booth for a few hours Friday.
Miller was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in early June 2004. This very aggressive form of cancer attacked her spleen and surrounding lymph nodes.
Thankfully, Miller’s been in remission since December 2004 and was healthy enough to return to her job this week on a part-time basis.
‘I think it’s wonderful,? said Miller of Oxford Bank’s participation in the Relay for Life. ‘I think anything we can do to help is great.?
If you missed the bake sale, don’t worry. Customers can contribute to Oxford Bank’s relay team anytime by dropping a few coins or bills in the collection cannisters placed at all seven branches and various customer service locations. ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
