Council wants to keep federal block grants

With one vote in opposition, the Clarkston City Council on March 28 adopted a resolution calling for Congress to block the proposed elimination of the federal Community Development Block Grant program.
The resolution notes a White House proposal to eliminate the CDBG program, administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and targeted to ‘low- and moderate-income? households, in the fiscal year 2006 federal budget.
The city receives approximately $8,000 annually through Oakland County’s CDBG program, with funds forwarded to programs intended to help senior citizens, youth assistance camp and counseling programs, and emergency assistance to low- and moderate-income city residents.
The council adopted the resolution without discussion, with Member Steven Wylie voting no.
The resolution will be sent to U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow.
