By Laura Weiner
Ah, how much I’ve grown up in just a year. All of you are probably wondering just who I am. Well you don’t know me, yet. I’m hoping one day you will. One day I want to see my name attached to articles, novels, stories you connect with. Someday I want you all to recognize my name, and know that I got my start right here, at The Clarkston News.
My name is Laura Weiner. I am from Bloomfield Hills, and I am a senior at Oakland University. My major is journalism, with an emphasis in print. I will be graduating in December of this year. Once I graduate, I want to write. I will write about anything, anyone, anyplace, as long as my words can interest and excite people, making them want to read. I have had this urge forever, starting with diaries and moving forward into college, where papers would never bore me. As it was just another opportunity for me to make my words dance, and let me tell you, making a summary on Aristotle dance is no easy task.
Upon getting an internship at The Clarkston News I was nervous about what was ahead. So far, what is ahead are some unique opportunities for me to grow and learn. I am excited to tackle any task they have for me, and am anxious to learn exactly what those tasks are.
As I said before, I have been growing up a lot lately. I moved out on my own. Realized one should have a manual when it comes to being out on their own, and also realized that this out on your own thing isn’t all it is cracked up to be. It is the little things that are hard when you are out on your own. I live with a roommate, Erin, and her cat, Bentley. I was not such a cat person before, but I am starting to get used to the little fella.
Living with those two is very different than living at home. My house is one that is always filled with people. I have a mom, Harriet, who is a teacher, and my dad, Marc, is a podiatrist. You may already know them, as they have spent the last week running around and bragging to anyone who will listen about my internship. I also have a sister, Dana, who is 25 and a teacher as well; my brother, Jeff, 19, is in school; and last but not least a dog, Sunday. We are all really close, and I try to get home a lot, whether it is to snag a meal or just say ‘hi?.
I recently started to take more classes pertaining to my major, which thankfully, I love. I finally have a definitive answer to the question, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up,? and that answer is a journalist.
I hope you all enjoy my articles, and drop me a line if you think there is anything I am missing. I could always use encouragement too, another downfall of not living with mom. You can contact Laura Weiner, ‘The Intern,? at shermanpub@aol.com, attn: Clarkston News.
