‘First place is sweet!?
Head coach Sue Roeher couldn’t have said it better.
The Oxford varsity softball team has battled its way to a first place position in the Flint Metro League and earning a Top 10 ranking in Oakland County.
Battling with the top teams in the league, Oxford has emerged victorious and proven they are a force to be reckoned with.
The Lapeer East Eagles fell prey to the hungry Wildcat squad in the latest league action.
In the first game of the double-header, the trio of senior Amber Cervantez, senior Jessica Anhel, and Freshman Kelsey Oliver accounted for the three Oxford hits in the game.
Oliver and Cervantez both scored in the bottom of the first inning, and the Oxford defense held on to the lead to keep the Eagles scoreless the entire game.
Cervantez had six strikeouts from the mound. In the nightcap, Oxford found themselves down 0-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Ladycats fought back to tie the game 3-3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth when captain Jessica Anhel ripped a double.
Freshman Kelsey Oliver reached first on an Eagle error, advancing Anhel to third. Senior Amanda Crump executed a successful squeeze-a bunt up the first base line- to score Anhel for the win.
Anhel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Oliver went 3-for-4 with one run scored, Crump was 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI, and Sophomore Amanda Jolly was 1-for 2 with an RBI.
The win improves Oxford’s record to 7-1 in the league and 12-12 overall.
