Softballs flew over the fences of Clintonwood Park on Aug. 3 as the seventh annual Michigan Home Run Derby returned to Clarkston. The event began and was held in Clarkston for five years straight, then shifted to the Lake Orion area last year.
‘Softball is something I like and am passionate about. This event gives players a chance to showcase their talent,? said Dave Miller, Clarkston resident and organizer of the Michigan Home Run Derby.
First place winner Scott Weaver of Howell won a $300 prize, plaque and pull-over jacket after beating Dwayne Lile of Clarkston in a showdown. The pair tied for the lead with six home runs a piece. Lile was rewarded with $200.
The third place prize of $100 went to Scott Hille of Livonia who won a showdown with 11 other participants finishing with five home runs.
In all, 30 people participated this year. Miller hopes to expand the prizes and size of the derby next year.
