Owen accepts offer to play softball at Oakland University

Recent Goodrich High School graduate Julie Owen had a number of options to play college softball next season.
In the end, though, she chose someplace where her family and friends could watch her in action.
Owen, a two-time All-State selection, has signed to play with Oakland University in Rochester next season. She also considered Wright State University (in Dayton, Ohio), Mott Community College, Oakland Community College, and Cal-State Fullerton.
‘It’s close to home,? Owen said. ‘I took a visit down there, and it felt like a good fit.?
Last year, Owen, the daughter of Phil and Ann Owen of Goodrich, made Division 3 All-State as a second baseman, and this year, she did likewise as a shortstop.
Goodrich varsity softball coach Rick Bescoe, who coached Owen in both of her All-State campaigns, said he thinks Oakland is a good fit for her as well.
‘They play the caliber of ball she’s accustomed to playing,? Bescoe said. ‘It allows her parents to come and watch her.?
Owen said she hopes to contribute whenever she can her first year at Oakland.
‘They might have an opening in the infield, but I’m willing to play anywhere,? she said. ‘I’d just like to play and get enough playing time.
She also said she has not decided what she will study in college, but is considering pre-medicine and pre-law.
Bescoe said he has no doubts Owen will succeed in the classroom as well as on the field.
‘She exemplifies what a Division I student-athlete is all about,? he said. ‘She has the work ethic to juggle academics and athletics. She’s got what it takes.?
