The Oakland Cobras girls fastpitch softball team has been making its mark this year as a competitive Oakland County 16 and under team.
Their season’s record for this year was 28-11. The Cobras placed second at the USSSA PC Pride Tournament, June 17-19, and placed third at the NSA State Tournament, held June 23-26 in Easton Rapids.
Placing in both tournaments qualified the team a spot at the USSA World Series and NSA World Series. The Cobras finished their season, placing in the top quarter in the NSA World Series in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Cobras team is 13 girls who live in Oakland County areas: Rochester, Rochester Hills, Lake Orion, Oxford and Clawson.
Many of the members of the Cobras have been playing softball together for the last seven years. They all share the accomplishment of playing very competitive softball for their high school teams.
Nine of the Oakland Cobras have been mentioned as part of the Eccentric All Area Team. Christina Collins, Meghan Kather and Jackie Doroshewitz lead the team in batting.
The Cobras had a very impressive pitching ERA with Katherine Alderson’s 2.11, Christina Collins? 1.46, and Ashley Ludwig’s 1.58.
Team members include: Alderson from Rochester Adams, pitcher/third base; Shelly Beery from Adams, outfielder/first baseman; Collins from Lake Orion, pitcher/first base; and Doroshewitz of Rochester, outfielder/catcher.
Also: Elizabeth Heinrich of Northwest Lutheran, outfielder/short stop; Laura Heinrich of Northwest Lutheran, short stop; Katner of Northwest Lutheran, catcher; and Ludwig of Northwest Lutheran, pitcher/second base.
Also on the team are: Devin Mulville of Rochester, second base; Kelsey Oliver of Oxford, third base; Rachelle Schultz of Northwest Lutheran, outfielder; Stephanie Sidick of Northwest Lutheran, outfielder/second base; and Layne Smedley of Lake Orion, short stop.
The team is volunteer coached by Jeff Ludwig of Clawson, Matt Mulville and John Doroshewitz of Rochester, and Bob Katner and John Collins of Lake Orion.
The NSSSA World Series in Chattanooga was July 23-31, and was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the team to experience playing with teams from all over the United States and Canada.
The coaches? and parents? philosophy has been to challenge the girls so that they can become the best in their game, and playing in this tournament gave them that opportunity, the coaches said.
