New stop signs on Glaspie, Pleasant streets

New stop signs were installed in the Village of Oxford last week on N. Glaspie and Pleasant streets.
The first signs were installed at the intersection of N. Glaspie and Powell streets, where the Polly Ann Trail crosses N. Glaspie St.
North and southbound Glaspie traffic must now stop at this intersection.
Manager Joe Young said the signs were placed there primarily to slow traffic entering the village from the township, particularly from the high school.
In the village, N. Glaspie St. has a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit, but in the township where it becomes N. Oxford Rd. it immediately doubles to 50 mph.
This difference has led to many speeding problems and complaints from Glaspie residents over the years.
Young said the stop signs are also there because officials are expecting increased pedestrian traffic on the Polly Ann Trail when construction of the trail surface and M-24 pedestrian bridge (beginning this month) is completed. ‘With the walkway going in we’re expecting a lot more people using the trail,? Young said.
An anticipated increase in pedestrian traffic was also the reason behind the placement of stops signs on Pleasant St. where the Polly Ann Trail crosses it between Dayton and Davison streets.
That area of Pleasant St. will be the site of the trail bridge’s western access point and consequently much construction activity over the next few months, another reason for the stop signs, according to Young.
