With a tough league season looming, the Clarkston boys cross country team has a nice feather to stick in their caps ? a first place finish at the Chesaning Invitational on Sept. 15.
‘We wanted to use (Chesaning) as a tune-up. It’s always better to go in off a good performance,? said Clarkston Coach Mike Taylor.
Clarkston finished with 48 points total. Leading the way for the Wolves were Hazen Brennan, who finished in third place at 16:41 and Nick LaMora, who took fifth and set a personal record with a time of 16:57. Rounding out Clarkston’s top five finishers were Matt Inch in 11th, Chris Anderson in 14th and Edward Brennan in 15th.
‘We did a good job. We stuck with the top runners and my fourth and fifth men put the meet away,? said Taylor.
Taylor hopes the early spirited competition carries over into the league season, which began on Sept. 20. Clarkston hosted Seaholm and Rochester High in a tri-meet which finished too late for this edition of The Clarkston News.
‘Seaholm is just as good, as we are if not better. We may be a bit of an underdog, they beat us last year by one point,? said Taylor. ‘But we will be alert and ready to go with our eyes wide open.?
Clarkston’s next action after the tri-meet is Sept. 27 at Lake Orion. Taylor expects the Lakers to also challenge for the league crown.
