In upcoming weeks, The Clarkston News will examine the effects of the recent reconfiguration of the Clarkston School district.
As reported in The Clarkston News, the redistricting came after Pine Knob Elementary gained a large amount of classroom space, while at the same time other elementary schools were experiencing overcrowding . Last November, school administration officials unveiled a plan to adjust the population of elementary schools by altering boundary lines within the district. The plan was discussed at the Nov. 29, 2004 board meeting and details of the plan made available to the public.
Shortly after plans were announced, several parents came forward with their concerns. Some felt the changes were unnecessary, while others were upset because they felt they were given insufficient time to review the plans. Others supported the changes and the process. Despite disagreements, the decision was approved in January and went into effect this school year.
With the changes in place, The Clarkston News would like to hear from anyone affected by them or involved in the process. In particular, the following topics will be examined in-depth:
? Overcrowding in district schools
? Parent Advisory Team/ Parent input
? Effects of moving on displaced students
? Necessity of the changes
? The elimination of School of Choice
? Effects on science, art and music programs.
