Volleyball slow out of the gates

A storybook beginning was not in the cards for Clarkston’s volleyball team as they succumbed 3-0 to Farmington High in their first action of the season on Dec. 12.
‘We are going to have to be a scrappy team this season. We are not that tall. We just have to do a good job defense,? Clarkston Coach Kelly Avenall said.
The Wolves kept the action close in the first two sets, losing 27-25 and 25-23. Farmington won the third set 25-10.
Though she feels her players must not get down on themselves, Avenall was impressed with her team’s hustle in their first action of the season.
‘They did a good job of fighting for balls that in the past I don’t think we would have got to,? Avenall said.
Sophomore Juliann Gillespie stood out in her first varsity action, recording 10 kills and four blocks.
The volleyball team and their fans have some mileage ahead as the team does not play at home again until Jan. 12.
Next up for the Wolves are away contests at Lahser on Dec. 15 and the Portage Invitational on Dec. 17.
