Weber leads Martians to seventh at Genesee County tourney

Goodrich sophomore Mark Weber helped the Martians finish in the upper third of teams at the Genesee County Wrestling Tournament Dec. 17.
The Martians finished seventh out of 22 teams, earning a total of 113.5 points. Davison won the tournament with 291.5 points, while Kearsley finished second (228.5) and Montrose third (216.5).
Weber finished first in the 112-lb. weight class at the county tournament, defeating Davison’s Zach Davis 15-1 in the championship match.
Two other Martians placed in the tourney. David Garr (103) finished in fourth place, losing to Birch Run’s Jared Germaine 6-4 in the third-place match, while Kyler Elsworth (152) took fifth in his weight class, pinning Bendle’s Kyle Bergeron in 2:56 in the fifth-place match.
‘At one point in the day we were as high as third place,? Goodrich coach Matt Turnbow said. ‘The quarterfinals and semis were hard rounds for us team wise. I’m hoping we’ll be right there in the thick of things, in the running for a county title next year. Our three placers were the highlight of the day. Mark Weber looked dominant in the finals.?
