Despite having both the regionals on Feb. 16 and the SEMSL championship on Feb. 21 rescheduled because of the winter which thought like spring, Clarkston skiers Trisha Peters and Eric Weiland are the Athlete’s of the Week.
The pair and the rest of the Wolves? ski team will be back on the slopes for regionals at Mount Holly on Feb. 22 and the SEMSL meet in now scheduled for Feb. 23 at Alpine Valley.
Both Peters and Weiland are juniors in their third year of competition for the Clarkston ski teams. They were selected as captains this year by Clarkston Coach Mike Foyteck along with Alyssa Vermeulen and Cobie Bland.
Peters has been skiing since the age of four and has raced competitively since the seventh grade.
Recently Peters? season long consistency helped the Wolves? girls team finish first in their divisional and win the OAA championship. Peters was Clarkston’s second scorer in both the slalom and giant slalom at divisionals and in the OAA championships solitary slalom event.
She, like the rest of the girls team, aspires to great things in the regional round of the state tournament and beyond.
‘This year we’ve had a really strong team overall. Our whole team including our fourth, fifth and sixth skiers have been strong,? Peters said.
In response to her team’s state championship chances Peters said ‘We’re just going to go for it.?
The boys team hit a rough stretch recently, finishing in third place at divisionals and the OAA championship, but without Weiland’s performances the skid may have been a fall.
Weiland, who began skiing competitively at the age of 14, took fourth overall in the giant slalom at divisionals and finished second overall in the OAA slalom.
‘We’ve had to work a lot harder this year,? Weiland said. ‘We’re coming together really good now. The most important thing is consistency.?
