Mark Weber didn’t let one loss slow him down in his quest to win another state championship.
The Goodrich sophomore, who lost his first match of the season in team districts earlier in the week, won the 112-lb. championship in individual district action Saturday, Feb. 18 at Goodrich.
Weber (49-1) defeated Madison Heights Lamphere’s Brandon Caron 14-5 in the championship match of the 112-lb. division. He is one of five Goodrich wrestlers to advance to individual regional action Saturday, Feb. 25 at Goodrich High School.
Sophomore Grant Overcashier (130) also won a district championship with a 15-9 win against Richmond’s Brian Peterson in the 130-lb finals. Overcashier improved his season record to 43-11 with the win.
Another Goodrich wrestler, Kyle March, finished in second place in the 171-lb. weight class, losing 19-4 to Richmond’s Jon Warner in the district finals.
Two more Martians, freshmen David Garr and Kyler Elsworth, won third-place matches in their weight classes to advance to individual regionals.
Garr (103) defeated Imlay City’s Kevin Ahrens by a 12-0 decision in the 103-lb. third-place match, while Elsworth (152) defeated Imlay City’s Jack Baker by a 9-7 decision to win third place in his weight class.
The Martians also achieved a significant team goal by defeating Flint Powers 42-23 in the finals of Division 3 team district action Feb. 15 at Armada.
Goodrich advanced to take on Durand in Division 3 team regional competition, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Durand.
Weber’s first loss of the season came in the matchup against Powers. Weber, who won by void earlier in the evening against Armada, lost a 9-1 decision to Cody Marcicki in the 125-lb. weight class, dropping his season record to 46-1.
The Martians advanced to the district finals with a 49-23 win against Armada in their district opener. Goodrich won nine of 14 matches ? four by forfeit, three by pinfall and two by decision.
