Doan’s two goals help Brandon icers advance in playoffs

Brandon’s varsity hockey team scored two third-period goals to hold on for a 4-3 win against Linden in pre-regional action Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Hartland Sports Center.
The Blackhawks (17-8) were scheduled to take on Lake Fenton in the pre-regional final Thursday, Mar. 2.
After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first period, Nick Foren tied the game at one when he scored on an assist from Matt Cinader.
Brandon’s Kyle Doan put the Blackhawks up 2-1 in the second period when he scored on an assist from Brandon Newman. The Eagles, though, scored another goal in the second period to tie the contest at two.
In the third period, the Blackhawks took a 4-2 lead when Newman and Doan scored. They then survived a late goal by Linden’s Darren Cross to advance.
The Blackhawks put an exclamation point on a perfect Flint Metro League season with a 9-0 win against host Clio in a Feb. 25 contest. Brandon wrapped up the regular season 12-0 in the league.
Brandon scored three goals in the first period, four in the second and two in the third on their way to the win. Doan led the Blackhawks in scoring with four goals and one assist, while Chris Nelson added two goals.
Others scoring for the Blackhawks were Matt Cinader (one goal, four assists) and Newman and Troy Nuccio (each with one goal and one assist). Brandon goalie Glen Kendrick stopped all 16 Clio shots.
