Despite snowy weather conditions, the Goodrich varsity baseball team found enough time to get one win against the Hamady Hawks Apr. 4.
The visiting Martians scored eight runs in the first inning and 14 in the second to earn a 22-0 win against the Hawks in a three-inning contest. The second game was called off due to the snow.
The Hawks managed just one hit in the first game, while committing six errors.
Goodrich coach Bob Foreback quipped that he and the Martians had a game plan to deal with the snowy weather if the two teams were to play a second game.
‘The harsh, cold condition created many opportunities for errors,? he said. ‘I told the boys to hit the big white ones (baseballs, as opposed to snowballs), but the umps said it was too difficult to see.?
Caleb Jones, Ben Gillam and Wes Coleman keyed the attack for the Martians. Jones went two-for-three with three runs scored and four RBI, while Gillam had three hits and three runs and Coleman had three RBI.
Jones also was the winning pitcher for the Martians, striking out five and walking two while allowing one hit. Steve Hughes pitched one inning, walking three and striking out three.
