They’re poets and they know it

The next T.S. Eliot or William Wordsworth could be sitting in front of a computer screen at Lakeville Elementary this very moment.
Throughout the month of April, the talented and creative fourth-graders in teachers Leslie Klingensmith and Christine Vince’s class have been writing poetry.
From limericks and haikus to acrostic and diamonte, a variety of poem structures and forms of verse were studied and used by the students to express themselves.
Everyday students spent some time writing, typing on the computer, and editing their poems.
Each student’s poetry is being sent to the Student Treasurer Publishing Company to be compiled, printed and bound as individual hardcover books.
Although each book will feature a different student’s poetry complete with individualized covers designed by the little authors themselves, they all bear the same title, ‘Where the 4th Grade Ends!?
Every student will have the opportunity to purchase his or her very own book. What a great keepsake.
Here’s a sampling of the children’s poems. Enjoy!

Emerald

Emerald is the color of a jewel.
Emerald is like a green broach.
Emerald is a fresh picked clover.
Emerald is the recycling bin in your garage.
Emerald the little green leprechaun.
Emerald a necklace on your neck.
Emerald not sapphire ruby.
