Golf team preparing for tough regional

Jackie Schram and Minjoo Lee played consistent golf to help Clarkston earn two top five finishes. The Wolves took fifth place at the Davison Invitational on May 1 and fourth place at the league tournament on May 3.
Schram was ill during the Davison Invitational, but still shot a 90 to help the Wolves take fifth with a score of 378. Mt. Pleasant finished one stroke ahead of Clarkston. Defending Class A state champion Grand Blanc won the event with a team score of 333.
The Davison Invitational featured many of the teams Clarkston will face at regionals, including Grand Blanc and Mt. Pleasant.
Schram was feeling better at the league tournament and finished in third place with a score of 81. Lee shot an 84 and tied for 10th place.
‘Jackie is very consistent,? Clarkston Coach Larry Sherill said. ‘She struggled early, but turned it around. We rely on her to set the tone for us. Minjoo has really improved this year. She doesn’t get in trouble. She is always in the fairways. If she is putting well, she will always have a good day.?
Sherill said his top three girls are solid, but the team needs more consistency at the fourth and fifth spots to qualify for the state finals.
‘We played much better as a team on (May 3),? Sherill said. ‘Everything we have done so far is to prepare for regionals. We are in one of the toughest regionals in the state.?
Clarkston’s regional is in Mt. Pleasant this season, so on May 6 Sherill took the team to the golf course the regional meet will be at.
‘We played the course and took a lot of notes,? Sherill said. ‘We didn’t want to go in there blind. It was a good thing we went. It’s a tight course. We hit several shots from different areas. It wasn’t about our score so much as it was learning the course. We took some good notes up there and it will likely benefit us a lot.?
The Wolves face a tough challenge in their next dual meet against Birmingham Seaholm on May 10. The Maples are in first place in the league. Clarkston faces North Farmington later in the week. The match against the Raiders is scheduled for May 11, but Sherill said the compeition may be rescheduled.
On May 12, Clarkston will take part in the Troy Athens scramble. The Wolves are the defending champions at the event.
