Lake Orion High School’s Class of 2006 is Steven J. Crowder’s graduating class, and his memory lives on through the Orion Art Center’s Steven J. Crowder Memorial Fund.
Crowder, 14 at the time, was killed on June 24, 2002, in a bicycle/motorist accident near M-24. The OAC’s fund has been awarding scholarships to graduating seniors for the last three years, and will be awarding a minimum of two $1,000-awards to Crowder’s peers through LOHS.
Awards will be given to those who exemplify the outstanding citizenship qualities of Crowder, and other criteria set forth by the fund trustees.
This year, two students won $500 each through the fund: Oxford High School senior Marie Rathburg was honored for her jewelry and glass creations, and Kelly Stieler of LOHS was chosen for her outstanding painting and pastel work.
Funding for the scholarships comes from the sale of ‘The Comet? CD, an inspirational compilation of original music by Oakview Middle School teacher Carl Zoolkoski and Phyllis Bengry.
CD’s are $15, and are available at the OAC at 115 S. Anderson, or by calling 693-4986 during regular hours, Tues.-Fri., 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Private donations are also welcome, and can be sent to the Steven J. Crowder Memorial Fund, in care of the Orion Art Center. The fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit, and your donation is tax-deductible.
