Goodrich’s varsity boys tennis team proved its superiority in a May 23 tournament involving four Genesee Area Conference teams.
The Martians outdueled Durand 12.5-10.5 to win the tournament at Atherton High School. The four teams (Atherton and Mt. Morris were the other two) are competing in a four-team independent league this season while awaiting the arrival of more GAC teams.
The Martians and Railroaders competed in the championship match in six of eight flights, with Goodrich winning four of those six matches. The Martians made it to the championship match in seven of eight flights, with the #1 doubles flight being the only title match Goodrich missed.
In singles action, Jakob Eich (Durand) defeated Brad Christensen (Goodrich) at #1 singles 6-0, 6-2; Duane Engleman (Goodrich) defeated Barry Hines (Durand) at #2 singles 5-7, 6-4, 6-1; Mike Iden (Goodrich) defeated Tim Richards (Durand) at #3 singles 6-3, 6-1; and Justin Slade (Goodrich) defeated Ryan Petty (Atherton) 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles action, Eric Housfelder and Trevor Montry (Durand) defeated Alex Slivka and Matt VanSumeren (Goodrich) at #2 doubles 6-3, 6-2; Joel Martin and Adam Bishop (Goodrich) defeated Adam Looney and Hansung Park (Durand) #3 doubles 6-1, 6-1; and Jacob McCormick and Dustin Brooks (Goodrich) defeated Fraser Dean and Dave Camp (Durand) 6-4, 6-4.
