Athlete of the Week ? Stephanie Parkison

Clarkston tennis player Stephanie Parkison will be taking her game south in the fall. Parkison signed to play tennis at Middle Tennessee State University.
Parkison had several offers from different universities, but chose a full-ride to Middle Tennessee. Parkison said she chose to play for the Blue Raiders because of location and the competition.
‘It’s a Division I school so it’s really competitive,? Parkison said. ‘I also liked the school because I love playing outside. It’s mild in the winter down there, so there will be no snow, which is nice.?
Parkison first came in contact with Middle Tennessee at a tournament she played in last summer. The Blue Raiders coach talked to Parkison and sent her information about the program. Parkison went on an official visit and decided it was the best choice for her.
‘When I signed it was a relief,? Parkison said. ‘It feels good after you work so hard for something and your finally done working for it. I’m really happy and excited to start something new.?
During the recruiting process, Parkison stayed in contact with former Clarkston tennis player Lauren Little, who currently plays tennis at Marquette. Parkison said Little gave her some valuable advice.
‘I talked to her about recruiting, how to contact schools and what tournaments to play in,? Parkison said. ‘We still play together over the summer. When I signed, she was excited for me because she knew what the process was like.?
Parkison also credits Little with helping her improve during her junior year.
‘It helped to go against someone so competitive in practice,? Parkison said. ‘Having her to practice with really helped me.?
Parkison and Little helped Clarkston finish in fourth place at the state finals in 2004. Parkison won the state championship in the No. 2 singles flight and Little won the No. 1 singles flight.
Last season, Parkison helped Clarkston finish in fifth place at the state finals, second at regionals and tie for the OAA II title.
In addition to her state championship in 2004, Parkison considered winning the Southeastern Michigan qualifier last season as her greatest accomplishments in tennis, but looks forward to having more as a Blue Raider.
