Stedman, Schmidtke lead Blackhawk cagers past Wildcats

Brandon’s varsity girls basketball team put on the clamps in the third quarter Sept. 19 and came up with a league victory.
The Blackhawks allowed just three points to visiting Oxford in the third quarter of their Flint Metro League game that evening, and put the Wildcats away for a 44-37 win. Brandon improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.
The two teams battled to a deadlock after the first quarter, with the Blackhawks and Wildcats tied at eight. In the second quarter, the Wildcats used a full-court press to try and slow down the Blackhawks and turn the momentum in their favor, but Brandon still maintained a 23-21 lead at halftime.
Led by seniors Savannah Stedman and Maria Schmidtke and sophomore Danielle Kwasiborski, the Blackhawks took control of the game in the third quarter. Stedman led the Blackhawks with 14 points in the game, while Schmidtke and Kwasiborski added 12 points each.
Five days earlier, the Blackhawks held on for a 35-33 win against host Linden. The Blackhawks led 20-7 at halftime.
Schmidtke led the team with eight points, while Stedman added six.
Meanwhile, the Goodrich varsity girls basketball team cruised to a pair of victories in Genesee Area Conference Red Division action, maintaining their spot at the top of the league.
‘Goodrich 72, Lake Fenton 28:
Sophomore Kortni Elsworth scored 17 points as the Martians routed the Blue Devils Sept. 19, improving to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Genesee Area Conference Red Division action.
The Martians held Lake Fenton to one point in the first quarter on their way to taking a 17-1 lead at the end of the period.
Paige Plant added nine points for the Martians, while Brandi Kushuba and Jo Anne Carter added eight apiece.
‘Goodrich 62, Montrose 20:
The Martians wasted no time earning another league victory, outscoring the Rams 30-2 in the first quarter on their way to the win.
Several differnet players contributed to the Goodrich scoring. Autumn Haggadone led the pack with 11 points, while Elsworth added nine and Jolynn Zirnhelt eight.
