Brandon Twp.- The students in Cathy Ciesielski’s British literature class loved ‘Pygmalion? so much they told her she should do it as the fall play.
‘I told them, ‘You’re right,?? says the Brandon High School English Department Chairwoman and fall play director. ‘They loved the humor and wit.?
Ciesielski is directing 18 cast members in ‘Pygmalion,? the non-musical version of ‘My Fair Lady,? at 7 p.m., on Nov. 9, 10 and 11 at the BHS Performing Arts Center, 1025 S. Ortonville Road. Tickets are $5 general admission and may be purchased at the door on performance days beginning at 6:15 p.m.
‘Pygmalion,? the George Bernard Shaw comedy, is set in 1912 and tells the story of flower girl Eliza Doolittle and linguistic specialist Professor Henry Higgins, who believes he can transform Eliza into a lady by teaching her proper English and makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering.
Ciesielski has directed 25 plays at BHS, and says this is one of her favorite plays.
‘I like the memorable lines, the sophisticated humor and the little spark of romance,? she said. ‘The kids love the humor, antics and the concentration on dialogue.?
Nick Bono, a BHS senior who plays the part of Henry Higgins, describes his character as ‘downright honest.?
‘He says what is on his mind,? said Bono. ‘He’s the kind of person you grow to love to hate. I love how cynical he is. It’s a really good play.?
Katie Lenartowicz, a senior who plays Eliza, agrees.
‘It’s fun and crazy,? she said. ‘I’ve had a lot of fun with it.?
As Colonel Pickering, junior John Schwartz portrays conservative views.
‘I like how everyone gets together and acts like one big family,? he said. ‘I think (the audience) will like the comic relief.?
