Brandon icers rally to defeat Swartz Creek; Oxford on deck

Brandon’s varsity hockey team remained undefeated in Flint Metro League play with a come-from-behind win against Swartz Creek Dec. 16.
The Blackhawks scored four goals in the third period to earn a 5-4 win against the Dragons, handing Swartz Creek their first loss of the season. Brandon improved to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while Swartz Creek fell to 6-1 and 3-1.
Chris Nelson led the Blackhawks in scoring with two goals, while Blake McLellan added one goal and two assists. Jeff Hammond made 42 saves in net for the Blackhawks.
Three days earlier, Brandon’s Matt Cinader scored two third-period goals to break a scoreless deadlock and lead the visiting Blackhawks to a 2-0 win against Lapeer East.
Cinader scored both goals unassisted. The first of them came with 9:54 left in the third, while the second came shorthanded with 6:46 left in the period. Brandon’s J.T. Wedding was called for cross checking with 7:22 left in the period, setting up the shorthanded opportunity.
The game was filled with penalties on both sides, with Lapeer East called for 11 penalties for a total of 23 minutes, while and Brandon 10 penalties for a total of 20 minutes.
Hammond was again the winning goalie for the Blackhawks.
Brandon was scheduled to play in a Wednesday, Dec. 20 game against Linden. Their next scheduled contest is Thursday, Dec. 28 when they travel to Oxford.
