Educators have long believed that learning to read at an early age gives children a head start in life.
To assist in that process, representatives from Kohl’s provided free books last Thursday to 51 children in the Lake Orion district’s Head Start program.
Peggy Lewis, a supervisor with the Kohl’s store in Rochester Hills, said each child in the program was presented with four books, along with bags of candy.
The donations were made as part of the Kohl’s Cares For Kids, an educational effort geared toward encouraging young children to read.
‘The program has been going on for some time,? said Lewis, pointing out that the KCK supports only non-profit groups that benefit children.
In addition to the book donation, Lewis and others spent time reading to the children (ages 3-4) and joining them in craft projects.
