Steven Auger, architect for the planned renovation of Lake Orion United Methodist Church, updated the Village Council last week on the status of the project.
Auger said the renovation will feature a major expansion of the church, that will include three stories of educational space and a new sanctuary that can accommodate up to 750 people.
The historic church was built in 1869, and moved to its current location on Flint Street sometime in the 1880s, said Auger. He said the $12 mllion makeover will be completed in phases, and be in keeping with the architectural style of the surrounding residential area.
‘We’re trying to blend in with the character of the current church and its surroundings,? Auger told the council. ‘The concern of the church is to keep the worship space on the main floor to make it accessible.?
Other proposed improvements at the church include a new formal entrance and substantially larger fellowship hall.
‘We’ll be filing for site plan approval early in the year,? said Auger. ‘The church is interested in staying here, and they want to let the village know.?
Council members acknowledged the church’s commitment to the community, before thanking Auger for keeping them informed.
