Art patrons couple up

Being a patron of the arts can take many forms. That is the philosophy Mike and Karen Shackelford share as longtime supporters of the Lake Orion Art Center.
The Shackelfords, who have given their time, energy, services and financial support to the Center for several years, have been named this year’s Art Patrons of the Year.
As the owner of Micro Tech Systems, a provider of ITT services to small and large companies, Michael regularly donates his computer expertise to the Orion Art Center.
Karen, on the other hand, volunteers for numerous committees and activities in support of the organization. She has co-chaired the Art Center’s annual Snowflake Ball and has modeled at the organization’s spring fashion show.
Their roles and contributions to the art community may differ, but the Shackelfords agree that, like music, art is one of the keys to enjoying a better quality of life.
Karen, who works as a counselor, says she sometimes applies art as a way to engage her patients and inspire them to communicate on levels they otherwise might not.
‘I like to use art as a form of therapy,? she says. ‘Looking at art can actually open up ways to dialogue how a person feels about something. Art connects people to their feelings. And it allows the creative juices that are in each of us to flow.?
From an intellectural standpoint, Karen believes art can open windows to the past, allowing us to better understand the dynamics of earlier generations.
‘I think art is a part of history,? she says. ‘It can help teach teach us how people felt emotionally during other historical times.?
Michael, who describes himself as someone who appreciates art, says it is important that schools continue to provide opportunities for students to test their creative potential.
‘It can be a good release for kids,? says Michael. ‘It can sometimes be the best or only way for them to be able to express themselves.?
The Shackelfords encourage other local art lovers to attend the upcoming Snowflake Ball, a Feb. 10 fundraiser to benefit the Orion Art Center. The event takes place at the Indianwood Country Club in Lake Orion, starting at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 8 p.m.
The couple will be among those honored during the event.
‘It’s a real fun time, and a very comfortable environment for people to meet, socialize and enjoy themselves,? says Karen.
The Shackelfords have two children; Bryan, 19, who attends Northwood University; and Chelsea, a junior at Lake Orion High School.
