St. Mary’s In-The-Hills Episcopal Church and Boy Scout Troop #128 hosted Scout Sunday Observance on Jan. 28.
In addition, several young people were recognized for earning the Religious Emblem of the Episcopal Church. Completing the God and Family program were Madison Sweat, Karmen Kahrs, Sarah Trumbore, Alex Kelly and Rachel McKenna. Kim Trumbore served as their counselor.
Four students completed the God and Church program, including Ian Kelly, Colin McGeen, Nick McKenna and Tyler Misiak. These young people made commitments to weekly church attendance, daily Bible study, learning the history and mission of the Episcopal Church, to performing service within the parish and service to others in the community.
The group met twice a month for over four months, and, as part of learning about world religions, they visited the Holocaust Memorial Center, a Buddhist Zen Meditation Center and a Hindu Temple.
As they studied the Episcopal Church, the students and their families attended services at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit and a meeting of the Vestry of St. Mary’s.
Each student selected a story from Jesus? life and ministry on earth, wrote a script, selected costumes and videoed each story vignette. Each student also participated in the November Scouting for Food/Can-Do Food Collection, and also served a full day at the Crossroads Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
At the conclusion of the study program, each student met with the Reverend Christine Humphrey for their final approvals.
The God and Country Religious Emblems program is administered by P.R.A.Y, and is an intentional study series, designed by each faith community to enhance the growth and knowledge of a young person’s understanding of their relationship with God and the Church.
