All those brand new American flags that lined Washington Street’s light poles in honor of the Fourth of July were courtesy of American Legion Post 108.
Originally, flags were purchased using donations from local businesses as part of Post 108’s ‘Avenue of Flags? program, which began in 2002.
But wear and tear from flapping in the breeze along M-24 leaves the flags looking faded and tattered after a while.
So earlier this year, Post 108 purchased 48 brand new flags for about $300 and donated them to the village.
Jim Parkhurst, past commander of Post 108, said the Legion didn’t feel it was right to ask local business owners to pay for new flags given ‘the way the economy is.?
‘Businesses have enough problems with money right now,? he said.
The flags are put up by the village DPW for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Flag Day, Labor Day and the 4th of July.
DPW Superintendent Don Brantley noted this is the second batch of replacement flags Post 108 has paid for.
