Not so happy campers: Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance

To the editor:
I’m a local parent with a concern for the recent camp hosted by the Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance program.
The youth camp was set for July 22-27 and cost each participant $20, which we subsequently paid prior to the beginning of camp. They informed us we would be notified later of required camp supplies and personal items needed for the stay.
On July 19, Cindy Allen (my sister-in-law), went to the building to find out about the camp trip and what supplies were needed, since we never received any further information.
The next day, someone called my house and informed us the boys would be leaving on July 22’and only needed to bring clothes for the trip. It was difficult to get the kids ready to leave in just two days. My sister in-law informed them she had difficulty preparing for camp on such short notice also. We both asked for a refund of the $20 per child’but were denied.
Last year, we were notified of the camp address, where and when to meet the bus, plus a two-page letter regarding the supplies’it was a far better experience.
This year the Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance took over the scheduling and planning for the camp. They also picked a camp that was one hour away compared to a half-hour away last year’it’s too far in case parents needed to pick up their kids early.
This year’s camp was unorganized and was not helpful to the campers or parents.
