Don Fahlquist, of Oxford, is a lucky man.
Not only does his wife of 22 years, Barbara, enjoy fishing, it was her prodding him to go that led to his winning the Oakland County Parks Fishing Contest for the month of July.
‘I have to blame my wife for this whole thing,? Fahlquist said.
Using a Heddon Torpedo, a topwater lure that imitates a wounded baitfish, Fahlquist caught a largemouth bass that weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces and measured 15 inches.
One day last month, Fahlquist’s wife, ‘an avid fisher-person,? convinced him to rent a boat and go fishing with her at Addison Oaks? Buhl Lake.
He didn’t have to wait long for the prize-winning fish to bite.
‘We got out somewhat in the middle (of the lake) and I cast it towards the weed beds and got lucky,? Fahlquist said. ‘On my third cast, up it jumped and grabbed it.?
Fahlquist’s wife convinced him to keep the bass and when they returned to shore, she got him to enter it in the monthly contest.
‘And low and behold, guess what happened? I won,? he said.
Fahlquist was awarded an Oakland County Parks Family Fun Passbook (a $130 value).
‘It’s a nice little packet and it will be used,? he said. ‘My daughter and her boyfriend used two of them to go to the water park the other day.?
As for the bass, it was served for lunch.
‘Nothing better than fresh fish,? Fahlquist said.
