Clarkston High School’s former auto shop is making way for a new science lab.
‘You don’t see the hand’s-on engine repair shop much in high schools anymore ? it’s more of a high-tech situation now,? said high school Principal Vince Licata.
The Clarkston Board of Education voted Oct. 8 to approve $213,600 for the science-room renovation project. Work will include removing and filling in an overhead bay door, adding a storage room, doors to existing storage rooms, and restroom, and installing science and technical equipment.
The room will be used by Oakland Science, Mathematics, and Technology academy, based at the high school. OSMTech is a half-day program heavy in math, science, and technology.
The district received seven bids on the project. Builders, Inc. of Clarkston was selected, with the lowest bid of $193,600. Clarkston Building and Grounds Department requested and received $20,000 more for unforeseen conditions.
Work should begin on Oct. 22 and continue in the afternoons after school. The goal is to complete the project within about 60 days, by Christmas break, said Wes Goodman, director of Building and Grounds.
In the Clarkston area, automotive classes will continue to be offered at Oakland Intermediate School District’s Technical Campus Northwest.
