Equestrians place 3rd in state

After four days of competition, the Oxford High School Equestrian Team earned a third place finish at the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association’s State Championship.
‘The competition was extremely tough and it was an exhausting weekend,? said coach Dee Shepard. ‘The kids, everyone, worked very hard.?
Earning 234 points, Oxford came in behind Milford High School (318) and State Champion Hartland High School (343).
Although Oxford beat Milford to earn the MIHA Regional Championship two weeks prior, Oxford did not fare as well against them at the State Championship.
‘Part of it is Milford was having an off time at regionals,? Shepard said. A team anticipated to be a top contender, Shepard said a lack of experience and difficulties with injured horses were obstacles Oxford dealt with.
‘We did make a few mistakes and we could have handled the pressure better in some areas,? she said. ‘The teams we were up against were extremely proficient at what they do.?
Shepard said seniors Kellie Roth and Bridgit Standifer led the team in points. The team earned their most points in huntseat and speed classes, making what Shepard called a ‘satisfying weekend.?
‘We had placings in every single event for the first time in the eight years we’ve been going, it just wasn’t enough,? she said. The team is now focusing on next year’s season.
‘Every season is rebuilding because you get new and lose some,? Shepard said, adding the team will be losing two seniors and anticipates bringing on six new riders.
