Cookbooks serve students’ Cause

Kids 4 a Cause are in the cookbook business, hoping to raise $1,000 for charity this Christmas season.
“We’re making cookbooks for Lighthouse,” said Brittany Schooley, fifth-grade student at North Sashabaw Elementary School.
“We’re raising money so they can help families in need.”
Cookbooks will be sold for $10 each.
All proceeds will go to Lighthouse ? to make their $1,000 goal, they have to sell 100 books, Schooley said.
Guided by their teacher, Ann Krause, the fifth graders interviewed teachers, administrators, and staff about their favorite recipes and the meaning behind them, said Alex Lies, cookbook student committee member.
“Mrs. Krause taught us interview questions,” Lies said. “We ask what the recipe was, how to make it, why they make it, who they make it with.”
Students will complete all the publishing work themselves ? interviewing, writing, copying, cover design, selling, and distribution, she said.
“We’ll put the recipes together by main dishes, side dishes, desserts,” she said.
Some favorites so far:
“Chicken jumbalaya, from Mrs. Ouellette,” Lies said.
“Chocolate supreme pie, from Mrs. Moss,” Schooler said. “That sounds good.”
The cookbooks are part of their year-long class service learning project, Krause said.
