Lake Orion High School senior Kyle Goodall has been selected as one of two high school seniors to receive a prestigious Central Michigan University journalism scholarship.
Goodall and Erinn Williams, of Detroit, have both been offered CMU’s Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition award.
Goodall, the son of Debby and Jeff Goodall, will be honored May 1 during the 2008 Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship and Media Leadership Speaker Series event.
The Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship is named for CMU alumnus and Saginaw native Lem Tucker, who graduated in 1960. Tucker worked for three major television networks and earned two Emmy awards before his death in 1991. As scholarship recipients, Goodall and Williams will be called upon to follow Tucker’s distinguished example.
At LOHS, Goodall has served as a producer, director, anchor, reporter and editor for the school’s television station, and as a radio reporter. His other school activities include forensics, National Honor Society, Thespian Society and Key Club. He also mentors freshmen, serves as a math tutor and volunteers with Special Olympics, compiling more than 110 service-learning hours.
‘I have been continually impressed with his outstanding character, creativity, leadership and above all, commitment to championing diversity in the community,? said Generation of Promise Program Director Christine Geoghegan in a recommendation for Goodall. ‘Kyle’s humble leadership is rooted in an abundant desire to combat prejudice.?
Goodall’s application essay discussed the importance of diversity in journalism.
‘If reporting is absent of diversity – a significant core democratic value of American society – the public takes away a reality that is skewed, even inaccurate,? he wrote. ‘Therefore, diversity in reporting helps establish justice and truth in society.?
He tentatively plans to study broadcast and cinematic arts, secondary education, and Chinese at CMU.
