Local women step up

There are approximately 3 million women in the U.S. living with breast cancer (2 million diagnosed, one million undiagnosed).
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated one out of seven women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
Each year, thousands of women and men make a commitment to help end breast cancer by participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day 60-mile walk, in 14 cities throughout the U.S.
To participate, each walker must raise a minimum of $2,200 to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
For years, Davisburg resident Sandy Rombach had the desire to participate in the walk, but, the fundraising requirement made her nervous.
Last year, Sandy and her co-worker, Bernadette Castillo of Clarkston, put their fears about fundraising aside and completed the 60-mile walk.
Bernadette said, ‘After attending the presentation to learn about the walk, and seeing what women with breast cancer endure, I felt I just had to do it.
‘Last year’s walk was an amazing experience. I didn’t expect so much support. We met survivors all along the way. It was a very emotional three days filled with so many tears. As soon as it was over I knew I’d have to sign up to do it again.?
Advice from Sandy, ‘Don’t let fundraising scare you away. So many people are willing to support this cause.?
During the first day, local boy scouts and high school students set up tents. After a full day of walking, everyone arrives at camp and portable showers are available for all.
Last year’s route wove through Farmington Hills, Farmington, Plymouth, Livonia, Canton and Dearborn with the closing ceremonies at the Henry Ford Museum.
Along the way, the cities have welcoming banners, the business employees and local residents? line up to cheer them on, hand out popsicles, snacks, water, and offer to spray you with a hose if you’re overheated.
The fundraising event at Terri King’s Salon & Day Spa last year was instrumental in helping Sandy and Bernadette exceed the $2,200 per person required prior to walking.
This year the fundraising has been a little slower. ‘We have many people who are planning on donating and supporting us again this year, but, it’s a little tougher for people with this economy.?
The Terri King Salon & Day Spa will host their Second Cut-a-Thon to benefit the 3-day walk on Saturday, May 17th from 9 am ? 3 pm.
For only $10 you can choose between a haircut, a 10-minute massage, or a buff and nail polish.
To support the cause, just show up. Donated gifts from local businesses will be arranged in gift baskets and sold, as well. All monies collected will benefit the cause. If you’re interested in donating, please call (248) 623-5464.
This year the Michigan 3-Day Breast Cancer walk is September 26-28, 2008.
