Hundreds donate at community-wide Red Cross blood drive

At a Red Cross blood drive held at the Independence Township Fire Station on Friday, June 20, donors were given many rewards for their blood.
This was part of a three-day, community-wide event running 9-11 a.m., Thursday through Saturday, with many sponsors including the WYCD 99.5 Detroit’s Country station.
About 250 people donated about 197 pints of blood. The drive’s goal was 300 people and 220 pints, said organizer Christie Kojima.
“That’s pretty darn close,” Kojima said. “I call that a big success.”
John Schull and Lucus Keppel of WYCD gave away tickets to concerts. Raffles inside the station gave away hair care products, a lease on a new car, and other prizes.
Blood donors were also given the opportunity to donate plasma and bone marrow.
After giving blood, donors were offered juice, water and homemade cookies provided by volunteers.
Culver’s Butter Burgers and Frozen Custard Shop gave ice cream to donors and gift bags were provided by a variety of other sponsors for the event.
